Carole loved writing letters to her friends and fans. She received a lot of fan mail and she tried to answer it all. Although she was very busy Carole typed (and sometimes hand wrote) many of the letters herself. She usually wrote letters on her personalized stationery. Her longtime secretary Nan Stuart also helped answer her fan mail. Most of the mail Carole received was friendly but she also had a few stalkers. She recalled "Several years ago a chap started writing letters 5 to 20 pages long. He would see one of my films then criticize or praise every detail. Then the letters got serious 'You and I were made for each other' and stuff like that."
During World War 2 Carole began writing to a soldier named Lt. Troy. They became close friends and her letters to him are very personal. The last letter she sent him was written on July 2, 1948 just two days before her death.
