In 1941 Carole co-starred in the musical romance Moon Over Miami. She had the supporting role of Barbara Latimer, a carhop who helps her
sister find a wealthy husband in Miami. Joan Davis was originally cast in this role but Carole replaced her. This was the first film she made
after signing with 20th Century Fox in 1940. The cast includes Betty Grable (as Barbara's sister), Robert Cummings (as Barbara's love interest), Don Ameche, Jack Haley, Charlotte Greenwood, Cobina Wright, and Dorothy Dearing. Despite getting fourth billing Carole demanded that her dressing room be as large as Betty Grable's! Unfortunately she and Betty did not get along and their feud was written about in gossip columns. Moon Over Miami was based on the play by Stephen Powry. It was a remake of the 1938 comedy Three Blind Mice.
Filming took place at 20th Century Fox studios in Los Angeles from March 3 until April 25, 1941. Several of the outdoor scenes were shot on location in Miami, Florida. The original title of the movie was Miami. It was directed by Walter Lang. Travis Banton designed the costumes. This was the first time Carole was filmed in Technicolor. She got to sing several duets including "Me-Oh-Miami" and "What Can I Do For You". Moon Over Miami was released on July 4, 1941. It became one of the most successful musicals of 1941 and Carole got rave reviews for her
performance. Fox would remake the movie again in 1946 with the title Three Little Girls In Blue. In 2006 Moon Over Miami was nominated as one of the AFI's great movie musicals.
