In 1946 Carole starred in the love budget comedy It Shouldn't Happen To A Dog. She had the leading role of Julia Andrews, a detective who solves crimes with the help of her pet Doberman. It Shouldn't Happen To A Dog was the last film she made while under contract at 20th Century Fox. Carole didn't like the script but she agreed to make the film to fulfill her contract. The cast includes Allyn Joslyn (as Julia's love interest), Henry Morgan, Jean Wallace, Margo Woode, and Rodney the dog. She and Allyn Joslyn had worked together before in I Wake Up Screaming.

It Shouldn't Happen To A Dog was directed by Herbert I. Leeds (who also directed Manila Calling). The costumes were designed by Eleanor Behm. Carole's make-up was done by her longtime friend Ben Nye. The movie was filmed at 20th Century Fox Studios in Los Angeles during February and March of 1946. It was released on August 26, 1946. Unfortunately the reviews for the movie were mostly negative and it was not a hit. Variety said "Carole Landis, appearing in only a few sequences, is OK and her name won't hurt on the marquee."
