"A dead body on your doorstep could prove very embarrassing to the department" ~ Janet Bradley
In 1946 Carole starred in the low budget crime drama Behind Green Lights. She played the leading role of Janet Bradley, a murder suspect who falls for the police officer investigating her. At the time she was under contract at 20th Century Fox. The cast included William Gargan (who plays her love interest), Richard Crane, John Ireland, Mary Anderson, and Mabel Paige. Carole and William Gargan had worked together before in I Wake Up Screaming and Turnabout.

Behind Green Lights was directed by Otto Brower. Sadly he died from a heart attack just four months after filming was complete. The costumes were designed by Kay Nelson. Her make-up was done by her longtime friend Ben Nye. Filming took place at 20th Century Fox Studios in Los Angeles during September of 1945. The movie was released on February 15, 1946. Unfortunately the reviews were mixed and it was not a box-office hit. Carole hated the script and would later say this was her least favorite film.
